METHODOLOGY

Methodology

A pentatonic scale uses five tones to create beautiful music. Similarly, we believe that music therapy can improve life and development in FIVE ways:

Five Benefits of Music Therapy

Social

Develops interaction skills, manners and relationship

Emotional

Encourages self-expression and confidence

Physical

Trains gross and fine motor skills and coordination

Cognitive

Develops attention span, memory skills and character growth

Musical

Promotes an appreciation for entertainment, arts, imagination and creativity

Music therapy is about empathizing. If you can use music to slip past the pain and gather insight into the workings of someone else’s mind, you can begin to fix a problem.”

The Method

Our methodology is based on the Iso-principle; meaning that our therapists aim to observe, understand and connect with their clients and match each session to their ability, mood or energy levels.

The ISO-Principle

“[Iso-principle is] a technique by which music is matched with the mood of a client, then gradually altered to affect the desired mood state. This technique can also be used to affect physiological responses such as heart rate and blood pressure” (Davis, Gfeller, & Thaut, 2008).

At the beginning of our sessions, our music therapists will evaluate the client’s unique needs, strengths and musical preferences. Based on their evaluation, the therapist will provide a customized treatment plan for the individuals. Treatment may include creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through the treatment, the therapist will continue to evaluate progress and improvement, and adjust the treatment plan to accommodate for progress. Ultimately, the patient’s involvement with music in a therapeutic context will help strengthen certain abilities and skills that can then be transferred to other areas of their lives.
